What you Should Expect After the Surgery?

Rhinoplasty may be the part where expectations of patients differ the most. All the social circle of the patient is curious about the change and sometimes this can even change the psychological world of the patient. Patients who undergo surgery gain more self-confidence and start to care about the smallest detail and expression change on their face. For this reason the period after surgery is extremely important.

My main philosophy for this surgery is to combine aesthetic with naturalness. I point out this issue to my patients both before and after the surgery. A slight tilt of the nose, minimum distinction at the tip, a gentle nasal dorsum curve, a nose that fits well to the face makes me and my patients very happy. In short, my main philosophy is to present a nose where nasal functions are preserved and natural beauty is emphasized.

I complete a rhinoplasty surgery within about two-three hours in average. During the surgery, owing to the long-term local anesthetics injected under the skin, patients feel very low and sometimes no pain at all after the surgery. However swelling and purple spots may occur under eye. Purple spots usually disappear within 7-10 days. Swelling takes longer to resolve. Based on classical information, almost 80% of the swelling resolves within one hundred days and real final result appears after 1 year. Contrary to general belief, the period after the nose job surgery is pain free and comfortable for the patient. The biggest challenge is the edema inside the nose, swelling and nasal obstruction due to blood and clot for the first 7-10 days. In this period patient breathes in and out through the mouth causing mouth dryness and lip skin crack. These problems are eliminated after silicon discs inside the nose are removed.

During rhinoplasty, after giving the final shape of your nose, plasters will be placed on the skin of your nose and a splint (termasplint) will be placed over these to protect the shape of your nose. 7-10 days after the surgery plaster and splint will be removed by your doctor. If you had open rhinoplasty, you will see that you have many small sutures at the tip of your nose. Sutures at the tip of the nose will be removed together with the splint and plasters. Millimetric silicone discs placed inside the nose to support septum will be removed on the same day as well. Since no pad is placed inside your nose, you will feel no pain while plaster, sutures, splint and millimetric disc inside your nose are being removed.

As a normal consequence of rhinoplasty, there will be swelling (edema) on your nose and face. Even though we try to take all measures during the surgery to prevent swelling, you will have to apply ice around your nose in 15 minute intervals for the next 48 hours after the surgery. Ensure that there is no direct contact of the ice with the skin so it would be better to place gauze dressing under it. Purple spots may form since blood collect under the skin. Purple spots should not be interpreted as if there is a problem, after a while they will disappear when body absorbs the blood under the skin. At the end of ten days, patient will recover with swelling on the nose and face. As we have mentioned before in the first couple of months swelling will dissipate and final results will be seen 80% in patients with normal skin thickness. This period may be longer in people with thick skin. In discussions before the surgery, I always inform patients about my anticipation regarding thickness of their skin.

To avoid permanent color change due to blood that collect under skin, sun protection and avoiding solarium is necessary. When plaster and splint on the nose are removed after the surgery, you will see a reformation compared to previous shape of your nose. However this look at early stages is not the final form of your nose. Minimum 6 months have to pass to see the final result. Within this period, you will recover very fast in the first 3 weeks and then gradually you will see that swelling on and around the nose resolves. In the early period after the surgery, there may be blood exudates and this is normal. In rare cases some patients experience heavy bleeding, they should immediately consult to their doctor.

Nasal hygiene is extremely important after surgery. Apply some special creams on the area with sutures at the tip of the nose; it is important for healing of the incisions. It would be beneficial to do nasal wash twice a day using special solutions. It is enough to use the antibiotics prescribed by your doctor for one week.
